Ranked #1 in northern New England by the Washington Post in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, John Bapst School is a private, non-religious day and boarding school serving about 500 boys and girls in grades 9-12. Applicants are accepted into all four grades. Featuring a caring school community in the small, safe city of Bangor (city population 33,000), John Bapst serves day students (90%) from 35 towns and cities in Maine and boarding students (10%) from foreign countries like China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Vietnam. John Bapst is accredited by the NEASC and is a member of NAIS, iTEP, TABS and Enrollment Management Association, formerly SSATB (Secondary SAT Board). The staff includes 49 teachers, 2 college counselors, and 10 on-campus houseparents. Headmaster Dr. Armistead is in his 16th year at John Bapst. In recent years, graduates have attended many Top 100 World Universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, MIT, McGill, Johns Hopkins, Chicago, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, UC-Berkley etc. Art and music graduates are studying at Pratt, Parsons, Fashion Technology Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, Berklee College of Music and Los Angeles College of Music. The school's strong technology program includes coding, cyber-security, robotics, and engineering. International students have captained teams in math, robotics, tennis, basketball, and chess. John Bapst has a strong AP program (25 courses taught on campus) and a culture that encourages students to join in American school life through drama, Model UN, Key Club (for community service), sports, and many other opportunities.
